BIRTHDAYS:

1923: Sun Records head and rock 'n roll recording pioneer Sam Phillips (would be 87)

1929: Wilbert Harrison ("Kansas City") would be 81

1945: Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page, also a session guitarist on several British Invasion hits, is 65.

1949: George "Funky" Brown of Kool and the Gang is 61.
 
HISTORY:

 
1965: The Supremes release "Stop! In The Name Of Love" on Motown Records.
 
1967: Jesse Winchester (The Youngbloods, "Get Together") went to Montreal, Canada to avoid being drafted into military service during the Vietnam War. He was granted amnesty by President Jimmy Carter in 1977. Today, Winchester lives in Charlottesville, VA, and continues to record and tour.
 
1967: The Beatles are in the midst of recording "Penny Lane."
 
1968: Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits album is certified gold, with a half-million copies sold.
 


1979: The soundtrack of Saturday Night Fever, featuring the Bee Gees, reaches sales of 25 million worldwide, making it the best-selling LP in history.

1979: The Blues Brothers' Briefcase of Blues album hits #1.


2003: Little Richard guest-stars on The Simpsons.
