1959: Elvis Presley totals his BMW on Germany's Autobahn while stationed there in the U.S. Army. He's unhurt.

1982: The final ABBA concert, in Stockholm, 1982

1962: The Beatles audition for England's Decca Records in England, who turn them down and sign the Tremeloes instead.

1972: Three Dog Night, with Buffalo's Corey Wells, become the first rock band to appear on a
Tournament of Roses Parade float.

1964: The Beach Boys record their hit single "Fun Fun Fun"

HISTORY

1960: The hit beach movie Where The Boys Are premieres in New York City, starring Connie Francis.

1961: The Beach Boys make their stage debut under that name at a Ritchie Valens Memorial Concert in Long Beach, California.

1961: Janis Joplin makes her stage debut in Beaumont, Texas

1962: Future Mamas and Papas members Michelle Gilliam and John Phillips are married.

1963: The Kinks make their stage debut in London.

1967: Sonny and Cher are asked not to appear at the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena on New Year's Day, after they supported teenagers protesting a city curfew.

1968: Billboard magazine reports that,  for the first time, annual US music sales topped one billion dollars.

1969: BBC TV declares John Lennon "Man Of The Decade," on the same day that Rolling Stone names him "Man Of The Year," and he New Musical Express quotes him as saying he's thinking of leaving the Beatles.

1970: Paul McCartney sues the other members of the Beatles for a legal dissolution of their "partnership," Four years later to the day the breakup would be legally final.

1971: Elvis Presley announces his upcoming divorce to his entourage. That night's New Year's Eve celebration was held at Graceland rather than a local club.

1971: Singer David Clayton-Thomas performs his last live show with Blood Sweat & Tears.

1972: The first Dick Clark New Year's Rockin' Eve is broadcast on ABC-TV. Guests include Three Dog Night and Al Green.

1974: Faces guitarist Ron Wood denies rumors that he will be joining the Rolling Stones to replace Mick Taylor. A year later, he's in....

1974: Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham are asked to join Fleetwood Mac.

1975: Elvis sets a new single-show record at the Pontiac Silverdome outside Detroit, earning $800,000.
