MUSIC NEWS:

Composer Burt Bacharach  is recovering after back surgery. The 81-year-old underwent the procedure on New Year's Eve . His recovery will postpone a live performance that he had been scheduled to perform in Florida this Saturday.

BIRTHDAYS:

Musician Paul Revere is 72. (Born 1938) He's the frontman for the group Paul Revere and the Raiders.

Rock journalist and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame curator Ben Fong-Torres is 65. (Born 1945)

"Rolling Stone" magazine publisher Jann Wenner is 64. (Born 1946) He has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a non-performer.

Singer Kenny Loggins  is 62. (Born 1948)
 
MUSIC HISTORY:
 
1958: The "Flying V" guitar design was patented by Gibson.

1974: James Taylor and Carly Simon became parents to a daughter, Sarah Martin.

1976: Former record company executive Kenneth Moss was sentenced to 120 days in jail and four years probation in connection with the 1974 drug induced death of Average White Band drummer Robbie McIntosh.

1980: A "Time" magazine article reviewing the music of the '70s called The Who's "Who's Next," the Rolling Stones' "Sticky Fingers," and Bruce Springsteen's "Born To Run" among the best albums of the decade.

1991: The Rolling Stones recorded "Highwire" and "Sex Drive," to be added as bonus tracks to the group's upcoming live album.

1992: Eric Clapton released the single "Tears In Heaven."

1993: Eric Clapton had the most nominees for the upcoming Grammy Awards, with nine. He won six.
